Michigan journalist: Biden can make gains in areas where Clinton struggled

Jordan Chariton, a Michigan journalist and CEO of progressive media outlet Status Coup, said former Vice President Joe Biden has the chance to make gains in areas in the Wolverine State where Hillary Clinton struggled in 2016.

“Hillary Clinton got 134,000 fewer votes in 2016 than Obama got in 2012 in Detroit, Detroit suburbs and Flint and its surrounding suburbs, so those are major pickup opportunities for Joe Biden, who is not very popular but more popular than Hillary because he’s attached to Obama’s auto rescue in Detroit [and] the surrounding suburbs,” he said on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” referring to former President Obama’s efforts to bail out the auto industry during the Great Recession.

Chariton also noted that the White House’s trade wars, particularly with China, have hurt farmers in Michigan, risking the president’s chances of running up the score in more friendly rural parts of the state.

The state is a top battleground heading into the November election after Trump flipped it in 2016, making it the first time Michigan had voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. Polls show Biden with a lead in the final sprint to Election Day.
