The Nation magazine’s national affairs correspondent, John Nichols, said Friday that despite some polls putting Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden ahead of President Trump in Wisconsin, the final results are likely to be close in the Badger State.
The latest RealClearPolitics polling average places Biden ahead of Trump in Wisconsin by approximately 4.6 percentage points, although a Susquehanna poll last week labeled the race as a tie and a Reuters/Ipsos poll put Biden in the lead by a margin of 8 points.
“Washington always misses everything about Wisconsin,” Nichols said on Hill.TV’s “Rising” Friday. “The one dynamic of Wisconsin that people have to understand is that this is an evenly split state. It has been for a very, very long time.”
“Its deep pattern is to have very, very close presidential results,” he said about the state that Trump won in 2016 by less than one percentage point over then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
The most prominent issue in Wisconsin this election, according to Nichols, is the state’s recent spike in COVID-19 cases, with recent data showing an average of 3,000 new infections per day in the state.
