Briahna Joy Gray, a former spokesperson for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) presidential campaign, said the liberal wing of the Democratic Party would be excited by the prospect of former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner (D) running for the House seat that could be vacated by Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio).
“I think it’s a very exciting prospect for a lot of folks on the left,” Gray said Wednesday on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
Turner and Joy worked together during Turner’s time as a co-chair of Sanders’s campaign and has been floated as a contender for Fudge’s Cleveland-area district.
Fudge is expected to be tapped as President-elect Joe Biden’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development, setting up a special election for her seat.
Turner earned a national platform during Sanders’s campaign as one of his most prominent surrogates, and Gray said she has retained credibility with the left as a result.
“After Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign in the spring, a lot of people on the left have been looking for someone who can fill his shoes, who can be a figurehead in what is now a very leaderless movement,” she said. “And Sen. Turner is one of the few figures who is still perceived to be uncompromising and really firmly committed to the values that made Bernie Sanders so popular.”
