RealClearPolitics reporter: Pence getting bipartisan praise for breaking with Trump

RealClearPolitics White House correspondent Philip Wegmann joined Hill.TV on Thursday to discuss the breakdown of President Trump’s relationship with Vice President Pence following a riot that besieged the U.S. Capitol amid the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Speaking with “Rising” hosts Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball, Wegmann said that the president’s disagreement with Pence over the issue of election certification had led to his most significant criticism of the vice president in years, while Pence himself was being showered with praise by Trump critics in both parties.

“[Pence] is getting support and praise from both sides of the aisle. I mean, it’s kind of wild when you have Democrats praising Mike Pence, but that’s what’s happening right now,” Wegmann said.

“He was more loyal to principle and Constitution than he was to the president. And this took Trump by surprise, apparently,” he continued, adding: “Trump ignored four years of loyalty from a vice president who was really sacrificial because he didn’t like, in the end, the last thing that Pence did.”
