Journalist Glenn Greenwald told Hill.TV that the U.K. District Judge Vanessa Baraitser made the right call by rejecting a U.S. extradition request for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
“The only reason she denied extradition was because the U.S. prison is so brutal and oppressive, especially for people accused of national security crimes and when they harbor animosity for people, like they do for Assange,” Greenwald told Hill.TV in an interview, adding that it was rare for the UK to deny a US extradition request.
Assange faces espionage charges in the U.S. over WikiLeaks’ release of confidential documents related to U.S. involvement in the Iraq War that exposed wrongdoing in the Middle East, including the killing of civilians.
Greenwald called Assange’s indictment a “miscarriage of justice,” arguing it was politically motivated.
