Former Ocasio-Cortez spokesperson: Manchin, Sinema should be primaried if ‘they’re going to stand in the way of progress’

A former spokesperson for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said his super-PAC intends to mount primary challenges to moderate and center-right Democratic senators who “stand in the way of promises that were made by Democrats.”

“[T]here are no excuses left for Democrats not to take action,” Corbin Trent, founder of No Excuses PAC, said in a Monday Hill.TV interview, as Congress grapples with the next round of coronavirus relief legislation. “One of those excuses they’re going to try to pull out is the filibuster, one of the other excuses is the fringe Democrats like Kyrsten Sinema or Joe Manchin,” he added, referring to the senators from Arizona and West Virginia.

The group intends to make sure that centrists such as Manchin and Sinema “are going to stand in the way of progress, if they’re going to stand in the way of promises that were made by Democrats, then the people in Arizona and the people in West Virginia and their donors [will] know about it,” Trent said. “Because we’re going to run ads, we’re going to make sure that this is made into an issue.”

Asked about the conventional wisdom that Manchin is the only Democrat capable of winning in West Virginia, Trent replied, “If that were true, let’s just cede that ground for a moment, that means, what, that you just throw up your hands and say, when Joe Manchin’s 77, the next time he’s up for re-election, we’re just going to hope that he wants to run?”

The immediate priority, he continued, should be “building back the brand of the Democratic Party, not through just talking but by doing.”
