David Shor, head of data science at the progressive nonprofit OpenLabs, discussed effective populist campaign messages and what resonates with voters, as congressional candidates start gearing up for the 2022 midterm elections.
“The trick to winning elections is talking about popular things that people care about in language that people understand,” he told Hill.TV in an interview, pointing to previous successful populist campaigns like former President Trump’s in 2016.
An “underrated point” that contributed to Trump’s victory, Shor said, centered around “material issues that people cared about.”
He added that the gap in values and vision in society is a sign that lawmakers are out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.
Elected officials, he said, should want “to tap into that resentment and into that vein.”
