The managing editor of election analysis site Sabato’s Crystal Ball told the hosts Hill. TV’s “Rising” Friday that Democrats could maintain a hold over the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
Kyle Kondik told co-hosts Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti that Democrats have a better-than-usual chance of holding the Senate despite the tendency of the president’s party to lose ground during the midterm elections.
Currently, Democrats hold a razor-thin majority in a 50-50 Senate, with Vice President Harris serving as the tie breaking vote. Georgia Sens. Jon Ossoff (D) and Raphael Warnock (D) put Democrats over the edge for the majority during their elections in January.
On Friday, Kondik explained that the party has multiple opportunities to pick up open or contested Senate seats.
“This is what’s interesting about the Senate in that, you’d typically say ‘oh, well it’s a 50-50 Senate, midterm with a Democrat in the White House, the Democrats are going to lose the Senate,’ because that’s what history would tell you, but the actual map isn’t that bad for Democrats,” Kondik explained.
