Kim Ives, the English language editor at weekly newspaper Haiti Liberté, said that the judge overseeing the investigation into Haitian President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination is relying largely on the country’s police force, which he said is “in total shambles.”
In an interview on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” Ives said that while Haitian Judge Mathieu Chanlatte is receiving some support from the FBI and Colombia’s intelligence service, this alone may not be enough to help put together the pieces behind the attack, which still remains clouded in mystery.
“The main thing he has to rely on… is primarily the Haitian police,” the journalist explained, adding the police’s General Directorate is “housed in trailers, basically in a flood zone,” and has bathrooms without running water.
“This gives you an idea emblematically of the Haitian police,” he added. “So, he has a very dull instrument to conduct his operation with.”
“I don’t know that the Haitian police is really going to be able to make that much headway here in Haiti, where corruption is so pervasive and so profound,” he said.
