Briahna Joy Gray, former press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, argued that President Biden’s support among Black voters is slipping because several proposals prioritized by African Americans are “the first at the chopping block” as Democrats discuss cuts to a multi-trillion spending package.
Gray, during a Wednesday appearance on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” said Biden and the Democratic Party have “over-relied on” Black Americans for political support.
“Right now we’re seeing news headlines that demonstrate the fact that Biden’s polling is not only shrinking with Democrats and Americans on the whole, but with Black Americans in particular who he has over-relied on, the Democratic Party has over relied on, as their base for years and years,” Gray said.
“If we look closely at the discrepancy between the promises that he made in the course of his campaign and the legislation that’s been passed or the efforts that he has at least fought for, there is a wide gap there and voters have noticed,” she added.
Gray said that throughout negotiations for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill, a key piece of legislation for Biden’s agenda, initiatives favored by Black voters and other minorities have been the most likely to get cut.
“In the context of this reconciliation plan, rather, is that a lot of the agendas that were prioritized by Black voters, and a lot of vulnerable voters of all races in America right now, are the first at the chopping block,” she said.
