Batya Ungar-Sargon, deputy opinion editor at Newsweek, said that she believes former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) “is poised for a comeback” despite the fact that he resigned last year amid growing pressure following a bombshell report by New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).
“I think that he is poised for a comeback … I think it was clear to a lot of people watching, certainly the polling from New Yorkers, suggests that a lot of them thought that most of [the accusations] were trumped up. There was only one accusation of physical assault — sexual assault — and that allegation is not being prosecuted criminally,” Ungar-Sargon said during a Monday appearance on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
Ungar-Sargon’s comments come as The Wall Street Journal earlier this week reported that the former New York governor was trying to gage how to make his first appearance back in the public eye after a report by James last year found he sexually harassed 11 women.
Cuomo has denied the allegations, but resigned in August amid growing pressure from Democrats. However, Ungar-Sargon believes that the report, in addition to the nursing home scandal, are not on the radar of New Yorkers.
“And so I do think that a lot of that is going to end up going away and unfortunately, too many people just don’t care about the nursing home scandal or the cover up afterwards,” she said, referring to allegations that Cuomo deliberately underreported the number of COVID-19 nursing home deaths in the state.
“The thing the media cared a lot about, which was this sort of #MeToo overreach story, New Yorkers didn’t care about and so I think he’s … totally poised to make a comeback,” she added.
