Republican pollster Brett Loyd on Thursday said it is smart for Republican candidates to use the threat of impeaching President Trump to drive voter turnout in House midterm races.
“I think it is,” Loyd told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking” when asked whether it was smart for Republicans to use Democrats’ impeachment threat as a campaign focal point.
“I think … the fear of a Nancy Pelosi Congress, that’s more powerful than any policy debate or anything else because I think Republicans and most of the independents, a majority of independents, see that as dangerous to some piece of policy that they like, be it immigration or economic policy,” he continued. “So I think it’s a fair thing for Republicans to campaign on.”
Democrats such as Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Al Green (D-Texas) have vowed to work to impeach President Trump.
Various Republicans, including Trump himself, have warned that Democrats will move to impeach him if they gain a majority in the House in November.
“We have to keep the House because if we listen to Maxine Waters, she’s going around saying ‘We will impeach him,’ ” Trump said at a campaign rally in April.
However, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has warned against efforts to impeach Trump, saying it would end up working against the party before the midterms.
“On the political side I think it’s a gift to the Republicans,” Pelosi said. “We want to talk about what they’re doing to undermine working families in our country and what we are doing to increase their payrolls and lower their costs,” Pelosi said.
