Republican pollster Chris Wilson argued Tuesday that it’s difficult for political rivals to compete with President Trump for attention given wall-to-wall media coverage of his administration.
“Donald Trump is the one person who dominates the news. He’s dominated the news since he took the escalator down and announced [his run] for president,” Wilson, who is CEO of the research firm WPA Intelligence, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
Wilson, who worked as the research director for Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) 2016 presidential campaign, said it was difficult to compete with Trump for media attention during the campaign due to Trump’s name recognition as a businessman and former reality TV star.
“It was always frustrating to us that there was pretty much nothing we could do that could get coverage on all three networks, and all Trump had to do was land his plane somewhere,” Wilson said.
The GOP pollster said he was surprised by the results of a new American Barometer poll conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company, which found that only 31 percent of all respondents thought Trump best represented the values of the GOP, while 54 percent of Republicans said the same.
Wilson said he was surprised that the figures were not higher for Trump given his status as the leader of the Republican Party and the large amount of media attention he receives as president.
