Political scientist Michael Cornfield on Friday said that the majority of Americans believe tech firms are responsible for making sure people receive accurate news and information, citing a recent George Washington University politics poll.
“We also asked who do you think is responsible for making sure Americans get accurate information, and they blame Google, Facebook, and Twitter more than they blame Donald Trump or the government in general,” Cornfield, who is the director of the GW Politics Poll, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“It is not a good season right now for big tech in the eyes of the American public,” he continued.
Various tech firms have come under fire from lawmakers and the public for their handling of Russian election interference on their platforms during the 2016 campaign.
The survey also found that 78 percent of respondents said that they were not confident social media and data firms, such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter were doing enough to combat future election interference.
Executives from Facebook, Google, and Twitter are set to testify before lawmakers on their efforts to combat foreign political interference efforts on their platforms.
