Forty-seven percent of Americans say they approve of President Trump’s job in office, according to a new American Barometer poll.
The survey, conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company, found that 23 percent of Americans “strongly approved” of Trump’s job as president, while 24 percent said they “somewhat approved.”
Fifty-three percent of Americans said they disapproved of Trump’s job, with 37 percent saying they “strongly disapprove” and 16 percent saying “somewhat disapprove.”
Eighty-two percent of Republicans in the latest poll said they approved of Trump, which is down 4 points from the last American Barometer survey.
Trump’s disapproval also went up four points among Republicans since the last poll.
Only 14 percent of Democrats said they approved of Trump, while 86 percent said they disapproved.
Overall, Trump’s approval dropped only 1 point from the last survey.
“I don’t anticipate these numbers changing that much,” Emily Ekins, director of polling at the libertarian Cato Institute, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“What’s different about Trump is if you look at him compared to other presidents in the past, other president’s have sometimes shined, where they’ve been in the 60 percentile, 60 percent approval range. Trump has never been there. His highest on average has been mid-40 percentile,” she continued.
“What’s surprising about this is that the economy is actually doing pretty well. So he’s actually been underperforming what we would expect him to be doing, given the economy,” she said.
The latest American Barometer was conducted before the publication of excerpts from Bob Woodward’s forthcoming book, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” as well as a New York Times op-ed from an anonymous senior White House official slamming the president.
The American Barometer was conducted from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 among 1,000 registered voters. The sampling margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
