Veteran political reporter Carl Cannon said on Wednesday that Democrats greatly benefitted from their strategy of early candidate recruitment during Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“The Democrats did something that they didn’t do two years ago, which is they spent a lot of time, way ahead, far in advance in candidate recruitment,” Cannon, Washington bureau chief of Real Clear Politics, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“And one of the things they kept hearing from their base, and their donors, and the grassroots was ‘we need more women candidates, and we need more veterans,'” he continued.
“The Democrats put a lot of thought into this [and] went out and recruited strong, women candidates,” he said.
Cannon’s comments come hours after Democrats took control of the House and various gubernatorial seats.
Over twice as many women ran for Congress in the 2018 midterm elections than in 2016.
As of late Tuesday, 80 women had been elected to the Lower Chamber.
Many of the women running this election cycle were first-time candidates, beating out more primary opponents than any other year.
