Pollster Mallory Newall said in an interview that aired Tuesday on “What America’s Thinking” that it’s difficult to imagine both sides of the aisle being pleased by President Trump’s response to a national tragedy.
“What comes to mind is that image after Hurricane Sandy of President Obama and [former New Jersey Gov.] Chris Christie [R],” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha.
Newall was referring to images of Christie embracing Obama after the then-president surveyed damage from Superstorm Sandy in New Jersey.
“To me, that feels so far from where we are today that it’s hard to fathom what a response in the Trump administration would look like that could appease people from both sides of the aisle,” she continued.
Multiple mass shootings and deadly natural disasters, including hurricanes, have taken place throughout Trump‘s administration.
Trump traveled to California last month to meet with Gov. Jerry Brown (D) to survey the damage from deadly wildfires that had ravaged the state.
“I think now is the time for solidarity and understanding and let’s learn how to do this together in the best way we can, and get ready because we’re always under some kind of threat,” Brown said ahead of Trump’s visit.
The two leaders have repeatedly clashed since Trump took office in 2017 over issues including immigration and environmental policy.
