Republican pollster Brett Loyd said in an interview that aired Thursday on “What America’s Thinking” that Americans should look to foreign automobile makers building cars on U.S. soil as a sign of progress despite news General Motors will layoff 15,000 jobs and close four U.S. factories.
“We have now manufacturers and assembly lines in South Carolina building Mercedes, which we didn’t have 10 years ago,” Loyd, president and CEO of the Polling Company, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on Wednesday.
“So this isn’t something where we’re just looking at the American car brand being GM or Ford or Chrysler. What we’re actually talking about now is bringing jobs and bringing manufacturing jobs to the U.S.,” he continued.
“I think we’ve got to keep that in mind when we’re talking about manufacturing of automobiles in the U.S.,” he said.
The Wall Street Journal detailed a report from WardsAuto.com earlier this year that found that foreign automobile manufacturers, for the first time in U.S. history, make more cars and trucks in the U.S. than GM, Ford and all other U.S. companies.
Loyd’s comments come after General Motors announced last week that it plans to slash 15,000 jobs and close four auto factories in the U.S.
President Trump slammed the company’s announcement and said he could end the federal tax credit for GM’s electric vehicles.
