Democratic pollster Molly Murphy said on Monday that Democrats need to keep their focus on issues likely to impact middle-class voters, as opposed to the potentially damaging legal developments that are continuing to emerge for President Trump.
“There’s a lot of fatigue, I think, with voters out there in this Trump kind of world. Do we trust him? Do we not trust him?” Murphy, a partner at ALG Research, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“People don’t believe that he’s truthful. They don’t believe that he’s necessarily focused on their priorities,” she continued. “I think it’s in Democrats’ best interests to focus on the things that voters are focused on, which tend to be issues, which tend to be an agenda that looks out for the middle class.”
“Frankly in the short term, I think that’s in their best interest. I think there will be more successful in the 2020 elections if they keep focus there, she said.
Murphy’s comments come as Trump finds himself under scrutiny after his former attorney Michael Cohen said Trump directed him before the 2016 presidential election to pay adult-film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal in exchange for their silence over their alleged affairs with Trump.
The developments have led some Democrats to float the idea of impeachment against Trump, but others have said the issue is not their top priority.
Incoming Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), the incoming chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, told Hill.TV last week that while Democrats could look into impeachment, the issue was not at the top of their priority list.
“Realistically speaking, you know, you know we can impeach in this House, but it can’t be followed through because there’s not a supermajority over in the Senate,” Bass said. “So I think impeachment might come up, but I guarantee you it is not the first item on anybody’s agenda that would be chairing these committees.”
