Hill reporter says technology has played a role in voters distancing themselves from institutions

The Hill campaign reporter Reid Wilson said on Monday that technology is playing a role in people’s distancing from societal institutions such as political parties.

“This is a long-term trend. It’s a long-term trend away from our societal institutions,” Wilson told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”

“It’s not just happening in politics, it’s happening in religion, it’s happening in community involvement and volunteerism,” he continued.

“People are associating less with the big traditional institutions of the past, and why would they when they can change the world with the click of a button? Whether that’s a $10 dollar donation to President Trump or [Rep.] Beto O’Rourke [D-Texas], or a $10 donation to the Red Cross when there’s a hurricane in some far-flung island that needs immediate assistance,” he said.

A Gallup poll released on Monday showed that 42 percent of Americans surveyed identified as political independents, while 30 percent said they identified as Democrats, and 26 percent as Republicans.
