Pollster Mallory Newall said on Wednesday that a “winner” will not likely emerge after the partial government shutdown — which is in its fourth week — officially ends.
“No one’s coming out of this looking any better,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking.”
“I don’t see that there’s going to be a winner coming out of this. There’s a lack of trust in the presidency. There’s a lack of trust in Congress and a majority of Americans on both sides not only say that it’s frustrating, but that it’s bad for the country,” she continued.
Republicans and Democrats have failed to come to a compromise on immigration, the issue at the heart of the legislative stalemate that caused the shutdown, which has left thousands of federal employees furloughed or without pay.
Government workers impacted by the shutdown missed their first paycheck as a result of the shutdown last week.
A Reuters/Ipsos survey released on Tuesday found that 51 percent of Americans blame President Trump for the shutdown, while 34 percent pinned blame on congressional Democrats.
