Political analyst Bill Schneider said on Tuesday that President Trump is “terrified” of members of his right-wing base, citing his commitment to the border wall in the face of a government shutdown since last month.
“There was some criticism of him for offering even a three-year amnesty to the ‘Dreamers,’ so the right was a little unhappy with that,” Schneider, a former CNN analyst, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha on “What America’s Thinking,” referring to the immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children.
“He was about to sign a bill passed by Congress to open the federal government without any funding for the wall, and when he indicated he might sign that, and a lot of senators had supported it, suddenly, the right started screaming at him,” he continued, referring to Trump’s initial deal with lawmakers to keep the government open in December.
“He drew back and said I’m not going to sign it. He’s terrified by those people,” he said.
Trump faced more backlash from some conservative figures on Saturday after he announced an immigration proposal that would provide three years of legislative relief for about 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients in exchange for funding for a steel barrier at the border.
Conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter slammed Trump in a tweet, saying the proposal amounted to amnesty.
Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb!
