Political analyst Bill Schneider said in an interview that aired Wednesday on “What America’s Thinking” that a move by Democrats to move ahead with impeaching President Trump would block anything else from getting done in Washington.
“What happens is, when impeachment comes on the agenda, there’s nothing else happening in Washington,” Schneider, a former senior political analyst at CNN, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha.
“We saw that in 1998 when [President] Clinton was impeached,” he continued. “Impeachment eats up the entire agenda.”
Schneider’s comments come after some progressive House Democrats, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), have spoken openly about impeaching Trump.
Talk of impeachment also dominated Friday after BuzzFeed reported last week that Trump had directed former personal attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, though they subsided after special counsel Robert Mueller’s office issued a rare statement disputing the explosive report.
While some progressive lawmakers have called for Trump’s impeachment, the party’s leadership, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have said Democrats should instead focus on issues such as the economy or health care until Mueller’s final report is released.
The Democrats took over the House majority this year with an ambitious agenda, including on health care and infrastructure.
