Pollster Mallory Newall on Thursday said that most Americans feel that they have not been able to get a good understanding of tax law in the U.S.
“People don’t understand tax law in this country, and the amount that they’re actually paying in taxes,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“A Pew study done a couple of years ago found that nearly half of Americans say that one of the most frustrating things about taxes for them is the ability to understand it,” she continued referring to a Pew Research Center study conducted in 2017.
The study found that 43 percent of Americans said that the complexity of the U.S. tax system was what bothered them most about the federal tax system.
The tax system has been a topic of conversation during the Trump administration following the GOP’s passing of a tax overhaul in December 2017.
Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has also drawn attention to the federal tax system by suggesting earlier this month that more wealthy citizens should pay a 70 percent tax.
“You look at our tax rates back in the ’60s and when you have a progressive tax rate system your tax rate, you know, let’s say, from zero to $75,000 maybe 10 percent or 15 percent, et cetera. But once you get to, like, the tippy-tops — on your 10 millionth dollar — sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent,” the freshman congresswoman said.
