Democrats and independents tend to view health care as a top priority, while Republicans skew toward immigration, pollster Mallory Newall said in an interview that aired Friday on “What America’s Thinking.”
“Health care and immigration continue to top this list, as they have for months,” Newall, who is research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Thursday, referring to Reuters/Ipsos polling.
“Health care really is the main focus for Democrats, and many independents, while immigration is the top concern for Republicans,” she added.
Health care was among Democratic candidates’ top campaign issues for the 2018 midterms, while President Trump and many Republicans focused on immigration.
A Reuters/Ipsos survey released after the midterms found that 32 percent of Republicans called immigration “the most prominent issue,” while 24 percent of Democrats said health care was their top priority.
“Health care was still a big factor in a number of campaigns — talking about not only keeping costs down but getting to keep your care,” Newall said. “It’s still a focal point.”
Immigration was back in the spotlight during the partial government shutdown, which started after Trump and Democratic lawmakers could not reach an agreement over funding for his long-promised border wall.
