Pollster says economy has become a top issue for Dems

Democratic pollster Nancy Zdunkewicz said in an interview that aired Tuesday on “What America’s Thinking” that the current state of the economy has become a concern for the party.

“It’s one of the top issues among Democrats,” Zdunkewicz, managing editor at Democracy Corps, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Monday.

“A lot of people are strapped for cash, and it is not easy out there,” she continued.

While Republicans have touted the economy under the Trump administration, polling shows that Democrats are not as convinced.

A Pew Research Center survey released on Tuesday found that, among those who think 2019 will be better than 2018, only 6 percent of Democrats say it will be because of the economy.

The economy has taken a hit in the opening weeks of 2019, with the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicting on Monday that the partial government shutdown cost the economy $3 million in permanent losses.

“I think a lot of people learned in the past couple of weeks just how many Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck,” Zdunkewicz said, referring to the shutdown, which saw federal workers miss two paychecks.
