GOP pollster says long-term immigration debate will shift to Dreamers

The long-term conversation on immigration is likely to shift toward the issue of citizenship for Dreamers, Republican pollster Conor Maguire said in an interview that aired Tuesday on “What America’s Thinking.”

“You’ve been seeing the conservations about, ‘What do we do with Dreamers?'” Maguire, a senior client strategist at WPA Intelligence, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons.

“I think now the long-term conservation is more about what’s going to happen in 10 years with Dreamers,” he said. “It could be a chance to really come to some place that gets both sides of a situation where Republicans are able to secure funding for the border, the $5.7 billion, but also be able to get to a place where [we’re] doing good work for the Dreamers.”

Dreamers are immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and later gained protection from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Negotiators are facing a Feb. 15 deadline to reach a deal on further funding for the 25 percent of the government that was shuttered during the record 35-day shutdown that ended on Jan. 25.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are skeptical about the odds of Trump securing funding for his proposed border wall.
