Analyst says most big-name 2020 contenders known at this point

Public opinion analyst Karlyn Bowman said on “What America’s Thinking” that all the big-name 2020 candidates and potential contenders are known at this point.

“I don’t think that it is possible that there will be a big name come in that we haven’t heard about yet,” Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Wednesday in an episode that aired the following day.

Simmons pointed out that former Vice President Joe Biden, who is mulling a run, is a big name who has not announced yet.

“There is some concern among Democrats that the longer he waits, the more that is evidence that maybe he either doesn’t want to run or there’s something else going on,” Simmons said. “There’s some ambivalence there, and usually ambivalent candidates don’t make good candidates.”

Biden said at an event in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday that he was “a lot closer” to making a decision on a 2020 run than he was at Christmas.

The 2020 candidate field has grown over the past month, with several contenders announcing bids, including former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who said he is mulling a run as an independent.
