Republican pollster Conor Maguire told Hill.TV in an interview that aired on Tuesday that House Democrats’ investigations of President Trump are a means for them to relitigate the 2016 presidential election.
“Democrats are going to want to investigate, and Republicans are going to say ‘no, we made the choice, this is our president,’ ” Maguire, a senior client strategist at WPA Intelligence, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“It’s … relitigating the 2016 elections over and over again,” he continued.
House Democrats have made it a priority to investigate various aspects of Trump and his administration since they took the reins as the majority party in the House last month.
Americans got a first look at what these investigations could look like last week when acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker was grilled by Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee on his oversight of the federal investigation into Russian election interference.
Trump, meanwhile, lashed out at the investigations in his State of the Union address last week, calling them “ridiculous” and “partisan.”
A new Hill-HarrisX survey published on Tuesday found that 46 percent of Americans said they believed congressional Democrats were too focused on investigating the president, while 41 percent said congressional Republicans did not do enough to scrutinize Trump’s activities.
