Pollster Robert Griffin on Friday told Hill.TV that most Americans feel that it is not fair that major corporations pay lower taxes amid a report surfaced showing that Amazon would not pay any federal income taxes for the second year in a row.
“This just doesn’t feel fair to most Americans,” Griffin, research director at the Democracy Fund Voter Study Group, told Hill.TV’s Kyrstal Ball on “What America’s Thinking.
“They look at the amount of taxes that major corporations are paying. They think about the amount of wealth that’s being accumulated by a very small percentage of the U.S. population, and they start to think to themselves ‘does this feel right? Does this feel like it needs readjusting based on what’s going on in society? And most of the time the answer is yet'” he said.
The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found that Amazon, which reported $11.2 billion in profits in 2018, did not pay income taxes due to unidentified “tax credits” in their disclosure.
The report also found that the company will get a $129 million federal income tax rebate, making their tax rate -1 percent.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll released earlier this month found that 76 percent of registered voters believe that the wealthy should pay more in taxes.
A Gallup poll conducted last April found that 66 percent of Americans said they believed corporations pay too little in taxes.
