Pollster Rob Griffin told Hill.TV on Friday that 2020 polling at this point is like saying who should win the best picture at the Academy Awards without seeing any of nominated movies.
“Looking at numbers as early as you mentioned is a little bit of a name recognition game,” Griffin, research director at the Democracy Fund Voter Study Group, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball on “What America’s Thinking.”
“Not to put it too much in this context, but it’s almost like saying who should win best picture for the Oscar before any of the movies came out,” he continued.
“There’s so much that’s still going to happen in terms of people just recognizing that,” he said.
Various polls have shown the current state of the 2020 Democratic primary, pitting candidates against each other, as well as President Trump.
However, the field is likely not yet complete, and some candidates, like Sens. Kirsten Gilibrand (D-N.Y.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and Sherrod Brown (D-Oh.) have relatively low name recognition outside of their states.
