Pollster Dan Cox told Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” in an interview that aired Friday that President Trump’s stagnant approval ratings could hurt him in 2020.
“It’s fine until you need to run for reelection, and you need more support than the low to mid-40s,” Cox, a polling and public opinion research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told host Jamal Simmons on Thursday.
“That’s sort of the danger area for an incumbent running for reelection. Although he will have all of the advantages of incumbency, it’s got to raise some concern among his campaign,” he continued.
A new Hill-HarrisX survey, released on Friday, found that Trump’s approval rating dipped after his State of the Union address earlier this month.
Forty-five percent of registered voters said they approved of Trump, which was down from 47 percent earlier this month.
Other polls also show Trump’s approval rating hovering in the 40s.
The RealClearPolitics average on Friday showed the president’s approval was at 44.3 percent.
