Pollster Dan Cox told Hill.TV in an interview that aired Friday that it is not unusual for evangelical voters to believe that God had a hand in President Trump’s 2016 election win.
“I think, particularly for evangelical Christians who believe intimately in human affairs, this is not an atypical view,” Cox, a polling and public opinion research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking” on Thursday.
Cox was referring to comments made by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who told CBN News last month that she believed God wanted Trump to be president.
“In fact, when I was at PRRI [Public Religion Research Institute], we asked whether God played a role in deciding sporting outcomes and a significant number and a larger number of evangelicals said yes, because again, God is involved in all things, and so obviously he would be involved in an election or sporting outcome,” he continued.
PRRI found in 2017 that 25 percent of Americans said they believe that God plays a role in determining the outcome of sporting events, including 41 percent of non-white Protestants and 36 percent of white evangelical Protestants.
