GOP pollster says Senate vote on Green New Deal will be a test for 2020 Dems in chamber

Republican pollster Chris Wilson said in an interview that aired Thursday on “What America’s Thinking” that the Senate’s vote on the Green New Deal will be a test for 2020 Senate Democrats’ support of the proposal.

“You see [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.] working hard to get a vote in the Senate so he can get the Democrats on record, particularly those running for president,” Wilson, chief strategist at WPA Intelligence, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball.

“You have [Sen.] Kamala Harris [D-Calif.], [Sen.] Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.], who say they’re for it, but let’s see if they’ll actually vote for it if it comes up,” she continued.

The proposal, which was introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) last month, aims to for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the United States while creating millions of “good, high-wage jobs.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) plans to force a vote on the resolution in the coming weeks. It is not expected to pass through the upper chamber.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) slammed McConnell for the move on Wednesday, saying it was a “diversion” from actually having a debate on climate change.
