Cohen hearing likely won’t impact Trump’s approval rating, pollster says

Pollster Mallory Newall told Hill.TV on Friday that Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony this week likely would not have an effect on President Trump’s approval ratings.

“What we’ve seen in our weekly Ipsos/Reuters polling is that the president’s approval rating generally doesn’t move that much regardless of what’s happening in the news,” Newall told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball on “What America’s Thinking.”

“He has a very limited amount of space between his floor and his ceiling, meaning he generally stays within the low to mid-40 percent range regardless of what’s happening,” she continued.

“He may move a couple of points here and there, but I don’t think this will have an impact,” she said, referring to the testimony of Trump’s former longtime personal attorney.

A RealClearPolitics average of polling on Thursday showed Trump’s approval at 44.4 percent. The average showed a 53.1 percent disapproval rating.

The president’s approval rating has hovered around the mid-40s for a significant part of his administration.

Newall’s comments came after Cohen delivered dramatic testimony before a House panel, painting the president as a “racist” and a “con man.”

While his former lawyer was testifying before Congress, Trump was in Vietnam for talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The leaders held a two-day summit but failed to reach an agreement on denuclearization.
