Pollster Emily Ekins on Monday told Hill.TV that she doesn’t think a large number of Americans necessarily care a lot about the congressional and federal investigations surrounding President Trump and his 2016 campaign, pointing to recent polling on the issue.
“I think that a lot of Americans out there just don’t care that much about these investigations,” Ekins, polling director at the Cato Institute, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.
“What we’re seeing in the polls is a lot of people actually don’t have strong opinions about the key players in these investigations,” she continued.
“Polls have shown that about 30 to 40 percent of Americans have either never heard of or have no opinion at all about people like Robert Mueller or Paul Manafort,” she said. “These are people that you’d expect them to know.”
Ekins added that Americans could turn against Trump if there was a significant development in the Mueller probe.
“Now if the investigation uncovered something real and concrete and clear, that would absolutely make a difference, including for a certain set of pivotal voters in Trump’s coalition. They would turn against him,” she said.
Trump has repeatedly decried special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling as a “witch hunt,” and has accused congressional Democrats of “presidential harassment” in their investigations into him, his administration, and businesses.
Trump on Monday seized on a newly released poll that showed half of those surveyed agree with his assessment that special counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation is a “witch hunt.”
Pollsters asked participants if they agreed with Trump that the special counsel’s probe into Russia’s election interference is a “witch hunt,” and that he’s been subjected to more investigations than past presidents because of politics.
Half of those surveyed said they agreed, and 47 percent said they did not.
