Democratic strategist Halie Soifer said in an interview that aired Thursday on Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” that President Trump moved back from talking publicly about foreign policy after some defeats.
“He is now, I think, retreating from talking about foreign policy,” Soifer, former national security adviser to Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), told host Jamal Simmons.
“He realizes he has no wins to point to,” she continued. “He has no real vision, no real agenda, and the times that he’s tried, he’s actually failed, such as some sort of deal with North Korea.”
Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un failed to reach an agreement at their second denuclearization summit last month.
“It was about the sanctions,” Trump told reporters last week. “Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”
Trump instead has worked to promote domestic issues such as economic growth under his administration and building a wall along the U.S. southern border.
But the president did make a significant foreign policy announcement on Thursday in saying the U.S. should recognize Israeli control of the disputed Golan Heights territory.
