Pollster Mallory Newall told Hill.TV on Monday that President Trump’s approval rating has weathered the storm of numerous unflattering news stories during his administration, but questioned whether that would last for the 2020 elections.
“His approval rating sort of weathers the storm regardless of what is happening,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“He seems to hold steady in the mid to low 40 percent range, and the question is, is that going to be enough to carry him to victory in 2020,” she continued.
“I think this week is going to be another great test of that,” Newall said.
The Real Clear Politics polling average showed Trump’s approval rating at 43.6 percent on Monday, while his disapproval sat at 52.8 percent.
Newall’s comments come one day after Attorney General William Barr sent Congress his summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings in the federal probe into Russia’s election meddling.
Mueller found no evidence of conspiracy or coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russians.
Barr said he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, upon reviewing Mueller’s findings, determined that the president did not obstruct justice.
