RealClearPolitics Washington bureau chief Carl Cannon told Hill.TV on Wednesday that Americans are relieved special counsel Robert Mueller has wrapped up his probe into Russian election interference.
“This is behind us. I think the American people are relieved,” Cannon told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”
“This was an investigation that some Republicans think should never have even happened. The president says this,” he said. “But [Mueller] was thorough. He spent two years … and he’s come up with his report. He could have gone another two years. We’ve had special counsels who went seven years.”
“The question to me is what are the Democrats in the House Judiciary Committee going to do? Are they going to want to impeach him anyway?” he asked.
Attorney General William Barr said in a summary of Mueller’s investigation that no evidence of coordination or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow was discovered.
Mueller declined to say whether Trump obstructed the probe itself, according to the attorney general’s summary. Barr wrote that he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined that the evidence was “not sufficient” to establish obstruction of justice.
A Reuters–Ipsos poll released on Wednesday found that 48 percent of respondents said they believe that the president “or someone from his campaign worked with Russia to influence the 2016 election.”
