Pollster Dan Cox told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Monday that Attorney General William Barr’s summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report essentially nixes Democrats’ hopes of impeaching President Trump.
“One thing it did do is take impeachment off the table, pretty much,” Cox, a polling and public opinion research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said on “What America’s Thinking.”
“[Speaker] Nancy Pelosi [(D-Calif.)] did that a little bit by sort of saying ‘hey, we’re not going to go down that road right now without sort of seeing more evidence,’ but I think now with the release of that summary, and even with the release of the report, I think you’re not going to hear much from Democrats on impeachment,” he continued.
Barr released his summary of Mueller’s report earlier this month, saying the special counsel did not find conspiracy or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
However, Mueller said he did not reach a conclusion as to whether Trump obstructed justice. Barr in his summary of the report said he had determined there was not enough evidence to prove those charges.
The House Judiciary Committee plans to vote Wednesday on authorizing a subpoena for Mueller’s full report.
