Democratic pollster Nancy Zdunkewicz said in an interview that aired Thursday on Hill.TV’s “What America’s Thinking” that there is no downside for Democrats jumping into the 2020 primary fray, arguing the move will only heighten their name recognition.
“I think there’s no downside right now to throwing your hat into the ring,” Zdunkewicz, managing editor at Democracy Corps, told host Jamal Simmons on Wednesday.
“As we saw Marco Rubio went pretty far in the Republican Primary, and still became, despite saying he wouldn’t be running for Senate, still became the Republican nominee for Senate, and was elected,” she continued.
“Presumably, some people get out early next year, and they have much higher name recognition, they’ve been able to build up their email lists, have more ability to fundraise, and potentially could run for other offices,” she said.
There are currently 18 figures running in the Democratic Primary, which is shaping up to be the largest primary field in history.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) is the latest politician to jump into the race.
