Democratic pollster Mike Greenfield said in an interview that aired Thursday on “What America’s Thinking” that Americans’ views on their taxes tend to be politically influenced.
“This is actually a political question,” Greenfield, founder and CEO of Change Research, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons on Wednesday.
“You know, Republicans, who in 2016 said the economy was bad, and then in 2017 when Trump took office they said the economy was better, and Democrats were the reverse,” he continued.
“I think we see some of that with taxes where Democrats say their taxes are the same or have gone up, where Republicans say their taxes have gone down,” he said.
The tax-filing deadline was Monday in most states, marking the first time Americans are submitting their returns under a full year of Trump’s 2017 tax law.
A new Hill-HarrisX survey, released on Thursday, found that 40 percent of Democrats polled said they paid more in federal taxes in 2018 than they did in 2017, while 25 percent of Republicans and 31 percent of independents said the same.
