Dem pollster says views on China trade negotiations depend on impressions of Trump, economy

Democratic pollster Pia Nargundkar said on Monday that those who are happy with President Trump and the economy are more likely to have more positive feelings about the ongoing trade negotiations with China.

“This poll largely just reflects your feelings about A, President Trump, and  B, how the economy is doing,” Nargundkar, a senior associate at ALG Research, told host Jamal Simmons on “What America’s Thinking.”

“If you like Trump and you think the economy is doing well, ‘oh OK, maybe these trade negotiations are going to continue helping the economy,’ ” she continued.

“If you don’t like Trump and you think that the economy is doing poorly, you’re worried about how this is going to make it even worse,” she said. “That’s why we see the difference between Democrats and Republicans.”

A new Hill-HarrisX survey, released on Monday, found that 58 percent of Democratic respondents said they believed Trump’s China negotiations would result in fewer jobs and economic opportunities, while  59 percent of Republicans said it would lead to economic improvements.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged over 700 points before rebounding on Monday after China announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods after Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese goods last week.

Trump warned Chinese President Xi Jinping in a tweet on Monday that China “will be hurt very badly if you don’t make a deal,” and accused China of backing away from previous commitments it made in negotiations.
