A majority of voters support raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
Sixty-four percent of registered voters in the Jan. 28-29 survey back an increase to the federal minimum wage, including roughly 40 percent of who say they “strongly” support the measure and 24 percent who say they “somewhat” support it.
By contrast, 36 percent of voters say they either
“strongly” or “somewhat” oppose increasing the minimum wage to $15 in the next four years.
Eighty-nine percent of Democrats and 67 percent of independents support increasing the minimum wage while 64 percent of Republicans oppose.
Democrats are expected to push a coronavirus relief bill that would include increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 through a budget reconciliation in which they only need a majority of the vote.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Tuesday said he opposed raising the minimum wage to $15, signaling potential conflicts with the passage of the next relief bill.
The most recent Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 945 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.19 percentage points.
