Poll: Voters split on panel with subpoena powers to investigate Capitol riot

Voters are split on the need to have a commission with subpoena powers to fully investigate the Capitol riot, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.

Fifty-one percent of registered voters said we need to have a commission with subpoena powers to fully investigate and understand what happened on January 6th, 2021.

By contrast, 49 percent of respondents said we should focus on future security for Congress and avoid pointing fingers about who was at fault.

Seventy-percent of Democratic voters support a commission without subpoena powers along with 51 percent of independents.

Sixty-eight percent of Republican respondents said we should focus on future security for Congress and avoid pointing fingers.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has called for a 9/11 style commission to investigate the Capitol riot that includes subpoena powers.

Monday, experts released a report recommending extensive changes to Capitol security following a review of the January breach.

The most recent survey was conducted online among 2,839 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 1.84 percentage points.
