A majority of voters said situations like George Floyd’s murder are isolated incidents of police violence, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
Fifty-four percent of registered voters in the April 24-27 survey said situations like the one involving former Minneapolis police offer Derek Chauvin and victim George Floyd are isolated issues of police violence.
By contrast, 46 percent of respondents said it is part of a larger pattern of misconduct.
Seventy-three percent of Republican voters said the Floyd case was an isolated issue of police violence along with 52 percent of independent voters.
Sixty-one percent of Democratic respondents said it was part of a larger issue of misconduct.
Sixty-six percent of Black voters said situations like Floyd and Chauvin’s is part of a larger issue concerning police violence while 59 percent of white voters and 54 percent of Hispanics voters said it was an isolated incident.
Last week, Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of Floyd and is due to be sentenced in June.
A wave of new police violence allegations have been brought to national attention following Chauvin’s guilty verdict, including the police killing of Daunte Wright, a 20-year old Black man in Minnesota.
The most recent Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 2,827 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 1.84 percentage points.
