Poll: 51 percent of voters say indictment of Trump Org CFO ‘politically motivated’

A slight majority of voters say last week’s indictment of Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg is politically motivated, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.

Fifty-one percent of registered voters in the July 2-3 survey said the move was politically motivated while 49 percent said prosecutors uncovered criminal behavior.

Weisselberg pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including tax fraud, conspiracy, grand larceny and falsifying business records. Prosecutors say he helped orchestrate a scheme to compensate himself and “other Trump Organization executives” with unreported income for years.

Seventy-five percent of Republican voters said the indictment is politically motivated, and 25 percent said criminal behavior was uncovered.

Seventy percent of Democratic voters said the move was due to criminal behavior being uncovered, while 30 percent said it was politically motivated.

Among independents, 51 percent said the indictment was politically motived while 49 percent said criminal behavior was uncovered.

The most recent Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 926 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.22 percentage points.
