A majority of voters said the newly expanded Child Tax Credit as a part of the American Rescue Plan is too expensive and no longer needed, according to a new Hill-HarrisX poll.

Sixty percent of registered voters in the July 20-21 survey said the policy is too expensive and no longer needed. By contrast, 40 percent said it should be extended to 2025.

Seventy-nine percent of Republican voters said the extended Child Tax Credits are too expensive and no longer needed while 21 percent said they should be extended to 2025.

Fifty-three percent of independents said the policy is too expensive while 47 percent said it should be extended.

Fifty-three percent of Democrats said it should be extended while 47 percent said it’s too expensive and no longer needed.

The first of the Child Tax Credit payments hit millions of Americans bank accounts on July 15th.

A new study found that the pandemic relief programs, including the extended Child Tax Credits, produce a sizable reduction of poverty, but the relief is expected to be temporary unless more funding is provided for the policies to continue.

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 949 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.18 percentage points.
