Poll: 80 percent say lawmakers should work across party lines more often

A vast majority of voters said lawmakers in Congress should work across party lines more often, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.

Eighty percent of registered voters in the Oct. 13-14 survey said lawmakers on Capitol Hill should reach across the aisle more often.

By contrast, 20 percent said they should work only with members of their own party more often.

Eighty-eight percent of Republican voters said lawmakers should work across party lines more often along with 77 percent of independents and 74 percent of Democrats.

A recent CNN/SSRS poll found Congress’s approval rating at 27 percent while 73 percent disapprove as lawmakers feud over government funding, the debt limit and two massive spending bills.

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 895 registered voters between Oct. 13-14. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
