A majority of voters say they think the investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is aimed more at scoring political points than offering an independent inquiry into the attack, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
Fifty-four percent of registered voters in the Oct. 18-19 survey said the investigation is more of a “partisan exercise” to score political points.
By contrast, 46 percent of respondents said the invention is working as an independent inquiry into what happened that day.
Seventy-percent of Democrats said the investigation is working as an independent inquiry while 79 percent of Republicans and 55 percent of independents said it’s more of a political exercise.
On Thursday, the House committee voted to hold former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress after he defied a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee, leaving the Department of Justice to weigh whether to pursue criminal charges.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 1,095 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.96 percentage points.
